The University of Kansas Undergraduate Research Center has awarded scholarships to 55 students for the 2024 spring semester. Two of those students are Exercise Science majors in the Health, Sport and Exercise Science Department. Brett Chapman, a senior from Leavenworth and Mason Thieu, a sophomore from Topeka both have been awarded $1,000 scholarships. Students apply for Undergraduate Research Awards by writing a four-page research proposal. Faculty reviewers evaluate the applications based on the merit of the applicant’s proposal and a recommendation from a mentor. Brett and Mason were part of the HSES Undergraduate Research Award Mentorship group led by Dr. Quincy Johnson.
Brett Chapmans’ research proposal was “Beyond the Stopwatch — The Jayhawks Sprint Project: Baseball.” Learn more about his project in the video below.
Mason Thieus’ research proposal was “Anthropometric and Physical Fitness Profiles of Youth Athletes.” He spoke about his project below.
Quincy Johnson, Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Science was the mentor for a group of eight students that submitted proposals for consideration.
Hailey Shively, a junior from Denver, Colorado and an Exercise Science Major with a Pre-Physical Therapy focus, also submitted a proposal.
