Dr. Johnson was also a keynote panelist at the 2024 Youth Medical Mentorship Fall Summit hosted by Union Public School District of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Youth Medical Mentorship was designed to empower a future healthcare workforce to become experts in their own communities. Becoming competent and compassionate healthcare professionals is a byproduct of unlocked leadership potential in our communities. The goal of YMM and the Fall Sports Medicine Summit was to develop solutions for the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students from across Oklahoma to impact health outcomes in the state. Dr. Johnson shared information about jump starting careers in sport science. He also introduced middle and high school aged students in attendance to Hawkin Dynamics force plate technology and how the data collected is utilized to support athlete development, performance, and return to performance.
“It was a full circle moment because it was in Oklahoma, and I’m from Oklahoma originally. That was one aspect and then the second aspect was introducing middle school-age and high school-age students to careers in sport science. One of the main things that I try to highlight is the importance of education. Unfortunately, we can’t all play in the NBA or the NFL, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t career opportunities. Such as, sport scientists, strength and conditioning professionals, or physicians.”
