Jayhawk Performance, a youth strength and conditioning research program housed within the Well-Fit Center and aligned with the Jayhawk Athletic Performance Laboratory has announced they have established a partnership with Hawkin Dynamics. Hawkin Dynamics, in a news release, said the partnership has led them to donate two of their industry-leading wireless force plates. The force plates will help ensure data collected during research done by Jayhawk Performance is accurate and reliable. The research and data gathered provides a unique opportunity to peek inside the critical stages of human development and advance the sport science field.
Dr. Quincy Johnson established Jayhawk Performance to gain a better understanding of athletic performance during crucial stages of human development. The program collects data from youth aged 8 to 13. Dr. Johnson serves as the program director and is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Health, Sport, and Exercise Sciences, the Assistant Director of the Jayhawk Athletic Performance Laboratory, and the Associate Director of the Well-Fit Center.
Based on Hawkin Dynamics’ partnership with the National Football League’s Scouting Combine interest in the underlying contributors to lower-body strength and power has grown. However, these contributors can be difficult to measure without access to technologies such as dual force plate systems. Dr. Johnson is looking forward to integrating this technology into the Jayhawk Performance program to answer questions about lower-body neuromuscular performance, asymmetries, and potential risk for injury within youth football populations.

The Jayhawk Performance program utilizes strength and conditioning methods to develop local youth populations and prepare them for success in sports. The focus is on fun, form, and function while employing long-term athlete development strategies in training. By integrating sports performance research, the data gathered from elementary to high school athletes will be used to monitor growth, development, maturation, and adaptation to resistance training.
With younger athletes, the program emphasizes exercise technique, motor abilities, and proper movement patterns. This focus is critical, as once a body learns a particular movement pattern, it is more likely to retain it into adulthood. By fostering healthy habits, the program helps guide their athletic futures and unlock their potential.
Over the next academic year, the program aims to continue to increase the size of the programs and their reach, while continuing to create and spread a positive impact. The end goal is to present and publish the program’s findings in peer-reviewed journals. The impact this data could have on strength and conditioning, sport science, applied strength and conditioning, and sport science research is yet to be seen.
